Right around the corner XP8 will be releasing a new MCD entitled Frames, but in the fall of 2005 they unleashed Hrs:Min:Sec into the world and it quickly became a chart topper in the club scene and for good reason. This CD, while leaning more towards the synth-pop / future-pop side, still has a lot of solid dance beats and addictive synths. Tohill’s vocals are unmodified and easily understood, yet they can still come off as dark as many of the harsh electro acts. Nearly every track has a ‘hook’, something that really sticks out after only one listen and will eventually get caught in your head. Not There has a retro, 80’s feel to its rhythm and beat, but is chock full of fresh synth sounds which compliment it greatly. Dreamt of Blue takes on a more old school EBM approach, with its steady, pounding, dominating beat. Flatline is a slow, creepy electro piece in which the beat slowly trots along, keeping equal pace with the near rap like vocals. While the music is domineering on Cuttin’N’ Drinkin, the sub-par vocal delivery really takes a lot of the energy out of the track. Seed is a solid EBM track with a fierce beat, powerful rhythm, and well placed and non aggressive vocals. Hrs:Min:Sec is nearly solid from beginning to end. There are a few bumps along the way, but not enough to make the energy slow down.
