Venus Fly Trap’s latest creation, Dark Amour, is a dark, slightly
experimental, goth rooted album full of feeling. Pulp-Sister is a
wonderful piece with swirling guitar work, clement backing electronics, and
catchy vocals. I Am A Camera is a equally impressive track with some
nice bass guitar work, mild percussion, and deep, intriguing vocals. One of the
slower pieces is Lifeforce. This track is vocal driven, with some
emphasis placed on the ethereal guitar work and mellow beats. Indian Good
Luck Symbol has a backing electronic rhythm overtop of which is placed
enigmatic guitar strumming combined with a staticy electronic guitar. The final
track, Decaying Orbit Part 1 & 2 - Redemption, is an 8 minute excursion
through experimental goth (if there is such a thing!?) with spoken word vocals
and Middle Eastern styled sound progressions. As the song progresses, several
other elements are added (such as some strict electro sequences and electric
guitar chords), but they quickly vanish, leaving only the vocals and horn-type
sound to carry the piece out. It took me quite a few listens to really
appreciate this CD, but now that I’ve become accustomed to its sound and style I
can honestly say that it is a truly wonderful piece of work.
