Stillborn is the new maxi
single from the Canadian group Unit 187. In the past year this group has
caught the attention of Germany’s Off Beat, who recently signed them for
distribution overseas. Still attached to 21st Circuitry here in the states,
Unit 187 assemble this 9 track disc full of remixes and a few surprises. Two
mixes of the title track start off this CD, with the first being the shortened,
more accessible radio version. The second version, the Satoven Mix, was
mixed by group member John Morgan who places the break-beat percussion in the
forefront of the track, making it the driving force. The next piece, Looking
at the Love Load (I Need Nobody But Me) is a very interesting piece.
Containing samples from the Kentucky Fried Movie, this track is
more or less an atmospheric / experimental piece with a smattering of vocals
amid the textural sequences. Seibold, of Hate Dept. fame, takes a hold
of Loaded and places the beat high in the mix, over top of Tod’s
semi-whispered vocals. Two separate mixes of Dead Dog are next, with the
first being the more notable. Again, it seems that the beat plays the prominent
role, only second to the throttling guitar riffs. This CD finishes off with a
track from the Loaded album, a cover of the B-52’s
Planet Claire. This is one of the few CD’s that 21st Circuitry have
released that is not a full length, which could only mean that they’ll only put
a single or MCD out there if they know it will do well. I’m sure Stillborn will
do just that, making it a good decision on their part and a bargain for the
customer.
