This Morn' Omina is a
very singular band - self described as a "Belgian Ritual Trance" band, they they
accomplish what some may deem as impossible: melding elements of the following
genres: world music, trance/techno, EBM and noise. The DCD release of Les
Passages Jumeaux is certainly no exception to this. As the 2nd
installment in the Nyan Trilogy, Les Passages picks up where Le Serpent
Blanc, Le Serpent Rouge left off. The band claims that the
philosophical goal of Les Passages is to demonstrate a "unity" of
opposites - in mind and body states so that things or concepts originally seen
as opposing appear to be identical. Musically, the songs are more cohesive than
most of the tracks on Le Serpent Blanc, Le Serpent Rouge, and solidify into a
danceable groove more quickly than on some of This Morn' Omina's previous
releases. For example, World Tree, which has a similar feel to the club
hit One Eyed Man, evolves into an extremely complex, organic dance
track after about a minute and a half. Agayu also has a textural ambient
intro but becomes a multi-layered world dance track complete with a brooding
didgeridoo bassline, tribal chorus samples and African styled polyrhythms.
A very welcome break from the 4-on-the-floor doldrums of some recent EBM.
