Ex-Insektian Eric Van Wonterghem is
back with a new, more experimental soundtrack type project entitled Monolith.
On is debut CD, Eric approaches music in a much different style than he had
previously. Decompressed Form is backed by a humming wall of electronics
while the foreground is dominated by agitated beats and a static rhythm. With
its continual computerized drone, the beatless Between Zero and One is an
atmospheric piece that could very well be the soundtrack for a gloomy sci-fi
movie. The drone carries on through to The Resolution in which a distant
rhythm moves towards the forefront and mild beats are added. From there
Virtual Product Code takes over with sporadic beats and a cyclic, humming
drone. Static Source Zits contains distant, rolling beats and icy
sequences on top of near-constant staticy sound. The final track, PXL Flux
V2.1 begins with a muffled Moroccan beat before giving in to a high-pitched
vibration that slowly morphs into a sound not unlike the sound of a distant
train. I was actually quite surprised with this disc, as I’m not usually too
fond of experimental music, but Monolith manages to create interesting and
varied pieces that flow together, making Compressed Forms seem
like a one song disc, broken down into 11 separate pieces.
