MENTALLO & THE FIXER
- No Rest For the Wicked
Disc 1: Songs: 13 Time: 71:39
Disc 2: Songs: 12 Time: 70:54
Back in 1992 or 1993 I bought the original
(and illegal) copy of Mentallo & the Fixer's No Rest For the Wicked
CD on Simbiose. On the ride back from the record store I popped the CD into my
CD player and gave it a quick listen. Their sound was the most confusing I had
ever heard and, at the time, it really turned me off. I soon gave the CD away
to a friend of mine who loved it and became a huge Mentallo fan. Well, since
that time, my musical tastes have matured and now, with the re-release of No
Rest For the Wicked, I can say that I think Mentallo & the Fixer were way ahead
of their time. The music is still very confusing and rather difficult to listen
to, but at the same time there's something about it that draws me in. Not only
does this new version contain all of the original tracks, but it also comes
packaged with a bonus disc of 12 unreleased tracks and remixed versions. Mentallo's
sound is constructed around jagged sequences, thick rhythms, creepy samples, and
dark vocals. There are come classic cuts on this CD, including When Worlds
Collide, Brutal Rapture, and the two versions of Cerebral Static.
The Dassing brothers create music unlike anyone else, and even to this day
manage to stand apart from the more standard electro acts. No Rest For the
Wicked is a must for any Mentallo fan, but, since the songs are very disturbing,
I still would not suggest it for those who are just getting into this type of
music.
