MATERA

Matera is
basically Scorn meets Meathead. In general, the music on
Same Here is a hybrid of dub and jungle/drum and bass. Mick Harris and
M. Teho T. create an album that joins two separate music genres together. Some
of the pieces (Pure Realism and the aptly titled Darkside 11 am)
lean more towards dark drum and bass while still retaining some dub elements.
Out of Your Woods is more along the lines of a standard dub track, but with
a touch of jungle in the low key percussion. The lyrics on this particular
track are a bit odd ("funf and nunf are nice to call"?) The jungle
nature of Non è is subdued as well, with more emphasis being placed on
the odd sequences and vocals than the beat itself. The simple drum and bass
beats on Constant Thing are intruded upon by a heavily distorted bass
beat that thumps along throughout the entire track. There are a few raw electro
sounds that pulse in and out of this track, but in the end, this piece carries
on for a bit too long with little diversity. It’s Vacuum Cleaner Time is
almost entirely composed of beats which sound as if they were recorded in a
cavern. There is a slight break at about the 3 minute mark in which several
sampled noises take over. Hip-hop beats meet minimalistic dub sequences are
what carry Too Much. Same Everywhere is made up of a slowed down
jungle beat and repetitive, low-end synth sounds. Also included on Same Here is
the accompanying single, which contains remixes for Too Much, Out of the Woods,
and Pure Realism. Same Here has its high and low points, but considering the
nature of the pieces and the musicians involved, it has to be hard to come up
with innovative ideas as to how these two separate styles of music should be
joined.
