According to the liner note London After
Midnight have been together for at least 10 years. Within that decade
London After Midnight have developed a sound that merges standard goth with
dense alternative dance music. Psycho Magnet encompasses the 8
years between 1989 and 1997, yet it's hard to tell which songs are older
recordings and which ones are new. In some ways that's good because it does
make the album flow easier, but on the other hand that's bad because it shows no
real development in their style. Anyone who's gone to a gothic / industrial
club in the past 6 months is sure to have heard some of the tracks off of this
CD. Kiss and Where Good Girls Go To Die seem to be the more
popular tracks, probably due to the fact that they have a strong dance floor
appeal. Regardless, neither of these tracks seems as strong when simply played
at home or in the car. Both are extremely repetitive with lifeless vocals and
moderately paced percussion elements. Shatter (All My Dead Friends) has
a Cure-esque bass line, combined with chiming synth sounds and spiritless
vocals. Sean's light vocals drift over top of ethereal guitar sounds and slow
beats on Carry On…Screaming (Ruins). HATE! Is comprised of
echoing vocals, aggressive guitars, and uptempo beats, making it one of the
harder tracks on Psycho magnet. All in all, London After Midnight's sound and
style really don't do much for me. I can hear that there is plenty of talent
within their music, but I think that they need to rethink their style and
possibly attempt to give each individual track its own life rather than settle
for the blueprinted sound that they now produce.
