KILLING FLOOR
- Divide By Zero
Songs: 13 Time: 46:01
San Francisco’s own politically charged, gut
wrenching electro group, Killing Floor, return with their sophomore
release, Divide By Zero. This strong 2nd release shows Killing
Floor moving in a more structured way, blending firm beats, bellowed vocals, and
minimal programming with hard guitars. The one thing that stands out on Divide
By Zero is the diversity of sound from track to track. While some tracks have a
strong sense of electronics within them, others play out with little or no
electronic elements. About to Break is one such piece. Punk like guitar
riffs collide against hollow, shouted vocals and raw, live drumming. Just the
opposite is true for Tear it All Away. This track relies upon a
throbbing electronic rhythm line that is related to EBM while the guitar play a
minor role as a background element. Howling sequences are used as a backdrop
for the chugging guitars and hip-hop styled beat on Twelve.Ten.Forty-Eight,
a piece centered around the Human Rights Declaration. The title track consists
of an amalgamation of softer vocals, trippy beats, subtle guitar work, and
sparse samples. Cold at Night is an even less aggressive piece comprised
of progressive rock guitar work, slow beats and minimal synth work. The oddest
track, Article One, is a 4 minute piece entirely made up of a barely
audible rhythm line on which spoken word vocals, naming various countries, is
laid upon. Divide By Zero is one of those few releases in which you will find
yourself humming along with after one listen. Be aware though, Killing Floor is
not all about the music, for their lyrics are equally as important.
