IVOUX -
Frozen
Songs: 9 Time: 47:50
Taking a break from Battery, Maria,
Shawn, and Evan delve into the subtler side of electronic music with their new
project, Ivoux. Frozen is their debut album which takes
the listener on a journey through an array of winter themed myths and legends
from around the world. The White Witch (based on a character from
British author C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia) is a whimsical
composition complete with sleigh-bell sounds, floating sequences and Maria’s
soothing vocals. Even with more prominent beats, Proserpina still
retains the cold / atmospheric nature of the album. Emily is based on
the US myth about a little girl who died in a snowstorm and haunt the same
meadow every winter. Haunting is the best word to describe this piece, as the
sequences are eerily soothing and Maria’s vocals are equally as ghostly and
tranquilizing. Named after the Japanese demon of the snow, Yuki Onna
manages to capture the mood of the Far East with oriental string arrangements,
majestic sequences, and delicate, spoken word English phrases aligned with
distant sounding Japanese spoken lines. Like most of the lyrics on Frozen,
Korturine tells a story, only this one is more joyous. Atop the crashing
cymbals, intricate beats, and enrapturing sequences, Maria sings of how a girl
saved her father’s village from a blizzard by wedding the Siberian lord of the
North Wind. Frozen is truly a set of moving compositions that are unrestrained
by time or cultural boundaries. Lyrically this is a splendidly moving album and
musically it’s regal.
