IRIS - Lose in Wanting
Songs: 6  Time:  33:39
After a stunning debut, Iris has continued to entice their fans with various maxi single releases.  The latest, Lose in Wanting, contains 5 mixes of the title track as well as a Count to Infinity mix of The Way I Live My Life.  Typically, I prefer a b-side or two in addition to mixes on a single such as this, but on Lose in Wanting I am quite contempt with the variety of the mixes found within.  To begin, we have the radio edit of Lose in Wanting.  Tripped-out beats and a throbbing rhythm compliment the siren-like sequences on this, the album version.  The vocals are ultra clean and crisp and the backing synths are twittering in nature.  Unlike many synth-pop acts, Iris isn't afraid to beef-up their sound with some harder elements.  On this piece, it is the rhythm that has the hearty feel to it.  System22 opt to omit the majority of that rhythm and replace it with a more prominent beat structure.  The vocals on this version are mixed into the background, allowing the piece to be carried by thunderous beat and technofied, ReBirth sounding sequences.  The Echoing Green has the most complex mix, adding in some additional guitar work and even some additional, female vocals.  At the same time, they retain that harder edge that I love so much on this, the Pyrotection mix.  On their own mix, Lovett's Sonar Eclipse mix, Iris stretch out the track to approximately 8 minutes, giving more time to each of the different sequences, rhythms, and beats.  While this version is not as heavy as the original, it is equally as impressive.  There are a plethora of subtle musical elements in this piece that give it a light and airy feel. A wet rhythm is supported by flattened out beat on the Lost in mixing version.  While not of equal caliber as the rest of the mixes, this one is diverse enough to suffice my tastes.  Finally, the Count to Infinity mix of The Way I Live My Life is light-hearted romp through delicate beats, tender sequences, and smooth vocals.  In closing, Iris has already proven themselves as a powerful synth-pop act to keep an eye on.  With the assistance of all of the artists involved on this single, they prove once again that, even if their sound is altered, they still come across as one of the more dominant acts on the synth-pop market today.
