Implant’s BrainFX is a collection of past compilation contributions, with 2 new tracks, and one remix.  Brainstorm, which appeared on the companion CD to Side-Line Vol. 5, is a very impressive piece with creepy samples that play against the equally as eerie lyrics.  The music itself it minimalistic and cold, yet there are A LOT of different sounds that weave in and out of the piece giving it an ‘ever-changing’ atmosphere.  First appearing on Transmission 01.97 compilation that came included with the 1997 issue of Culture Shock, Slowly Mutating is a track that does just as its title suggests.  Strange quivering sequences, muffled beats, and load of samples congeal together on this dark musical piece.  I’ve Been There (from Celtic Circle Sampler IV and Electrauma 3) is a slower, vocal driven piece with distant sequences and an up-front rhythm and beats.  I’ve Been Remixed is an instrumental version of I’ve Been There.  On this mix, the sequences are boosted up, the beats are speed up, and most of the vocals are omitted, creating a more dance orientated version.  My Sin is a new piece that begins as if it were an experimental / noise piece, but a firm beat, whispered vocals, and rough electronics are eventually implemented.  My Sin (Neurotix) is an instrumental version on which the beats are edgier and noisier than the original.  This mix could be considered a crossover between cold EBM and aggro-noise.  Lastly, Drop-Out is a short closing piece which is very experimental in nature.  Erratic beats, a scraping rhythm, and grinding electronics are all combined and together create a tracks that (in a short 2 minutes) wander through nearly every genre of electronic music.  BrainFX is a great introduction to the many sounds of Implant and also a nice way of gathering some of their compilation pieces together onto one disc.
