Chris McCarter has taken over the vocal
responsibilities of Ikon, bringing a breath of fresh air into this
Australian electro / goth outfit. Subversion is a mini CD that
foreshadows the new full length, This Quiet Earth. Subversion
III is comprised of light electronic elements, a mild backing beat, and tame
vocals. The vocals on Cry For Love are the prominent aspect of this
track, with the clattering rhythm and sweeping synths acting as the backdrop.
Very acoustical in nature, The Glory of Justice is a simple track that
features three major elements, hollow, cascading synth sounds, Chris' vocals,
and a catchy acoustic guitar riff. Vacuous vocals and acoustic strings give
In Trust I Return (Remix) a very Church-ie feel. Time & Illusion
best melds the two musical styles of this EP together. With both electronic
and non-electronic elements, this piece does sound like a more upbeat / friendly
gothic piece. Subversion is a nice segue between the Ikon of old and the Ikon
of new. It should prepare the listeners for what can be heard on This Quiet
Earth and beyond.
