In the Shadow of the Angel
Songs: 12 Time: 44:40
Ikon has to be the catchiest goth band
on the planet. Granted, I’m not a huge fan of gothic music, so it really takes
something unique to get my attention in this genre. Ikon definitely has what it
takes. Some of their melodies and chord progressions take me back to my high
school days when the Cure’s Head on the Door was released.
It’s the subtlety of their music that I’m attracted to the most. No need for
gloomy lyrics about how the world has turned against them or how all the love on
the planet is lost. Albeit the vocals do tend to lean towards the style
cultivated by Ian Curtis (Joy Division), but there is enough originality
within the music to allow me to overlook that aspect of their sound. Originally
released in 1994, In the Shadow of the Angel is bound to be one of
those albums that sells well with the goth kids in the US, with a potential to
cross over into the alternative dance crowd. Another possible selling point is
the fact that this album contains a cover of Death in June’s Fall
Apart. Not being familiar with the original, I can’t say how Ikon’s version
compares or differs. With enough publicity and club play, Ikon could very well
become just as their name states; a good representation of somber goth rock.
