GRAVEN IMAGE

Black Lung Cathedral
by Graven Image was not exactly what I had assumed it
would be. Judging from the artwork on the cover and throughout the booklet most
would presume that Grave Image was a four member, heavily goth-orientated band.
While their sound does have some gothic elements, the majority of the pieces are
more grounded in the electro genre. The vocals on some of the pieces (Smear
and Descriptive Lines) have some goth tendencies to them, but then on
other pieces you get a taste of synth-pop (Scarlet) and even harsh
electro (Plastic). Each track on this CD has a life of its own, making
it somewhat difficult to nail down exactly what type of sound Graven Image are
going for. Plastic is more or less an electro dance piece with rapid beats,
scattered samples, and manipulated vocals. Scarlet, with its trippy beat and
slow vocal delivery, has an atmospheric feel to it. Smear is as close to a
straightforward gothic piece as Graven Image gets. This piece, propelled by a
steady, thumping beat, spoken word vocals, and wafting sequences, is the
lightest track on the CD. It quite apparent that Graven Image have a good ear
for composition and the strength of their individuals songs speak for
themselves.
