GARDEN OF DELIGHT
- Paradise
Songs: 7 Time: 41:51
Nearly seven years after their formation,
Garden of Delight treat us to Paradise, their 7th and final
studio album. From lyrics revolving around spirituality, or lack thereof, to
compositions that are dark, foreboding, yet danceable, Paradise will surly
attract the attention of goths while, at the same time, being somewhat enticing
to the electro heads as well. Spirit Lovers (to mega therion) begins
this CD with rumbling, noisy sequences that give way to a raw beat and enigmatic
guitar work. The vocals have an internal reverberating sound to them as they
bellow out overtop of the music. Procession (edit) is built around an
acoustic guitar, snarling vocals, and a raw / live percussion. There are some
electric elements within this piece, but they are restrained beneath the more
live sounding elements. A deep guitar sound is prevalent throughout White
Stains / Nuctemeron, as are the thick, breathy vocals. Stranger is a
more ethereal piece that is driven by the vocals while a slow, bongo-style beat
runs through the background. The Circle Will Be Close Forever is the
final track on Paradise. This piece acts as both an exit for CD as well as the
band. By closing the circle, Garden of Delight fade away from the limelight,
but should remain in our souls forever. It’s a shame that I didn’t get a chance
to discover this band earlier in their career, for what I’ve heard from them
this past year has been a refreshing new, melodic goth sound which is both
moving and soothing simultaneously. There will be more to come from this band
in 1998, as they plan on releasing some more live material for their fans
