GARY NUMAN - Exile
Songs: 10  Time:  52:24
It's very hard to try to pinpoint the sound of Gary Numan's latest full length, Exile.  In some places it's more electro than anything, but at others it leans towards synth-pop and even coldwave.  Dominion Day, the opening track is comprised by Gary's wafting vocals, backing guitar chords, a tin-like beat, and ghostly sequences.  The entire piece has a creepy / eerie feel to it.  Dead Heaven, with its trippy backing beats, haunted sequences, and near-rap delivered vocals, is my favorite piece.  As its title suggests, Dark is an ominous electro piece that has some ambient tendencies in the sequencing.  This is one of the pieces in which Gary allows his vocals to come off sounding synth-poppy, which adds even creepier layer to the track.  There is an apparent dark theme that runs throughout this entire album and songs such as The Angel Wars and Innocence Bleeding are proof of that.  Numan even admitted in one interview that his new approach to music may be partially due (or attributed) to the choleric and angst-ridden music of people such as Trent Reznor.  At any rate, Exile is a wonderful, musically light album that exudes gloom and despondency.  Where will Numan go from here?  Only he knows for sure.
