FUNKER VOGT
- Killing Time Again
Songs: 7 Time: 37:58
The year of the Vogt continues with the
release of Killing Time Again, a 7 track MCD from Funker Vogt.
In the past year we've been treated not only to a Funker Vogt full length (We
Came To Kill) and MCD (Take Care), but also a few
side-project releases (Ravenous' No Retreat, No Surrender &
Fusspils 11's Gib Ihr Einen Namen.) Before 1998 is over we
should also see a new Funker Vogt CD entitled Execution Tracks and
an accompanying MCD entitled Tragic Hero. For the mean time,
let's concentrate on Killing Time Again. Along with the pair of remixes of
Killing Fields we also get 3 new / unreleased tracks, one other remix, and
one live track. Of the two mixes of Killing Fields, my personal favorite is the
8 ½ minute Killed Mix. A gradual build-up in the beginning of this mix
paves the way for what is to follow; hard beats, angry vocals, and dense synth
patterns. Even though this track is rather lengthy, it fires on all cylinders
and is over before you know it. The other mix, Guitar Fixer Mix II,
isn't as powerful, but it is still effective. Evil's Birth
contains a similar rhythm as Killing Fields, but it seems to be pitched up a tad
and played at a higher octave. In all honesty, this piece does sound as if it
were cut from the same pattern as Killing Fields, but topped with alternate
lyrics. I can't say that the Mezzo Mix of Evil's Birth is much different
than the original, but it is a bit shorter. Vision is a slower piece
that trades in the frustration found in most Funker Vogt tracks for a more
mellow approach. The synths are a bit lighter and the beats aren't as 'in your
face.' The Race is On is an instrumental track with a rolling rhythm and
near gothic styled sequences. As far as instrumentals go, this one is quite
interesting. Lastly we have a live version of Black Hole. The vocals on
this piece over power the music making it hard to determine exactly how the
instruments sound in a club environment, but I'm sure that if I were in that
audience I'd be having one hell of a good time. I have to hand it to Gerrit
Thomas (aka Rote X)….for as much music as he has created in the past 12 months
it is consistently good and never fails to stand apart from what most everyone
else is doing.
