Straight of the heels of their latest full
length Implode, FLA comes back with this EP of mixes and a new
track. While the album itself was a wonderful production, the jury is still
out on this one. Well, let me start with the good. Perhaps the most
delightful surprise was the Rhys Fulber mix of Fatalist. After he quit
FLA, no one was sure if we'd ever see his name related to Leeb stuff ever
again, but thankfully, he's here. Rhys' mix starts off very soundtracky with
low strings and some trademark Fulber chords. The mix then speeds up
introducing a hard hitting beat and some interesting sequences (although it is
fairly evident form the bassline that Leeb did ALL the basslines in FLA). A
sure to be classic. Now it's time for the mediocre. Front 242 turns
Retribution into a fast paced dance track, with some amusing distortion of
the vocals. While this song is pretty good, it isn't really what you'd expect
from Front 242, the guys who invented this music... Deception
is the new track from FLA here, and it pretty much sums up the whole feel of
the previous album: Breakbeats piled upon regular ones, your standard Leeb
bassline, cryptic lyrics, snippets of guitar here and there, and a nice string
line at the end. This song is set up pretty much the same way Retribution is.
Not bad, but nothing to write home about. Two mixes are provided by
Aqualite, and while the first is rather uneventful and bland, the second,
done in the name of their side project Tribal Techno, is a pounding EBM
piece with fluttery sequences and a driving beat/bass combination. Lastly,
Haujobb do a priceless mix of Prophecy, turning it into what can
only be described as a Caustic-Grip Rap Industrial song! I'm
not kidding, there are samples from Caustic Grip floating around among a
reworked Prophecy beat. Wonderful. Like I said, this EP isn't bad, but just
not what we expect from these guys. Oh well...1) Fatalist (Rhys Fulber rmx)
2) Retribution (FRONT 242 rmx)
3) Deception
4) Fatalist (AQUALITE rmx)
5) Prophecy (HAUJOBB rmx) 6) Fatalist
