FAITH ASSEMBLY

Red Ambition

I discovered Faith Assembly last year
thanks to A Different Drum. I enjoyed the single for Her Deepest Sleep
and relished in the sound of their last full length, My Mortal Beloved,
so I was thrilled when this little gem showed up in my mailbox. After just one
listen, I was hooked, but it wasn’t any of the versions of Red Ambition
that reeled me in, but rather the b-side track, If Heaven Falls. This is
one of those rare pieces which, after listening to, I was sure that I had heard
it before. I checked back over all of Faith Assembly’s releases, but couldn’t
find it. I even went to the trouble of contacting the label, but I was assured
that If Heaven Falls had not been previously released. Smooth male vocals drift
atop of a bed of light electronics and a river of trippy beats. I can’t
pinpoint exactly why I found this track so enjoyable, but it stuck in my mind
for days after first hearing it. The Ambitious Club Mix of Red Ambition
is driven by dubby percussion, peaceful vocals, wet sequences, and the
occasional harmonization of the backing vocals. On the more upbeat side, the
Red Light Mix mixes the vocals straight into the mix, utilizing them as any
other instrument. There are some slight techno sounds to this mix, but not near
as many as the more ambient version, the aptly titled Trance Mix. It
seems that with the rising number of synth-pop acts out there today it would be
hard to find one that really stands tall above the rest, but Faith Assembly have
done just that. Keep a close eye on these guys, as their fame is destined to
grow as steadily as their music.
