FRONT 242 - Headhunter 2000

CD 1: Songs: 9  Time:  52:50
CD 2: Songs: 8  Time:  51:52

The jury is still out on this one.  On one hand I think that many of the 17 remixes are good due to their diverse nature, but on the other hand since we're really only dealing with one song, the CDs do become somewhat repetitive.  Headhunter 2000 contains remixes of one of Front 242's more prominent songs.  Some of the remixers include Haujobb, Noisex, Funker Vogt, Resistance, and Front Line Assembly.  FLA's mix has their staple, cybernized sound injected into it, but the track itself isn't really as 'mixed' as I had hoped.  What I'm trying to say is that this mix follows the same general pattern as the original.  Aqualite's mix is very different.  They twist Headhunter into a trippy, IDM track and only seem to utilize a fraction of the original sounds, supplementing them with more ambient sequences and faster, techno-styled beats.  Another very different mix comes from Haujobb.  On this version Haujobb transform Headhunter into a straight edged ambient piece with a slow, throbbing bass line and twisted synth sounds.  The vocals are left as is, but they do not make their entrance until the track is nearly over.  Beefcake do a similar job with their mix, supplementing trippy beats for the original, and adding in drifting synth patterns.  A great mix comes from Xingu Hill (when are these guys ever going to get signed!)  They really f**k up the piece and breathe new life into it by rearranging the structure and giving it a sci-fi feel.  Doug Laurent delivers a goa version of Headhunter.  Pounding beats are juxtaposed against crisp sequences, and a machine-like rhythm.  Unfortunately I was not too impressed with Noisex's remix.  Granted, Raoul does give the track a very noisy edge, but he also makes it way too repetitive for my tastes.  A staticy rhythm section is added in by Leæther Strip, who also manages to give this piece a more aggro feel.  Of course Funker Vogt toss in their standard 'thump-thump-
thump' beats on their mix, which, although not stupendous, is great for aggressive dancing.  The Galan Pixs' remix is a minimalistic one at best, but much different than the original.  With a hip-hop beat added in, this mix is a rhythm heavy, dense electro dance track.  The remainder of the mixes really didn't strike as too great, as most of them sounded a bit too techno-ie for my particular tastes.  Like I mentioned above, I still can't decide whether or not I like this release.  There are some good reworkings, but I don't think there are enough to warrant a 2CD set.  Besides, no matter how diverse the mixes are, can one really listen to the same song for nearly 2 hours?  I suppose from a DJ's point of view this is a worthwhile CD set, but as far as listening to it from beginning to end...I have yet to be able to do that.
