ESCAPE, THE
- Amaryllis
Songs: 11 Time: 59:40
Whereas I was not overly impressed with their
single, The Escape does a much better job on their full length,
Amaryllis. Amaryllis begins with Last Page, a piece that
combines classical song structures with modern goth. Last Page contains a
Tubular Bells type sequence, breathy / acoustic guitar work, and deep /
echoing vocals. Light alternative groups such as The Church come to mind
when I hear Lost in Heaven. The guitar work is light, yet powerful, the
beat is slow, yet substantial, and the vocals are monotonous, yet catchy (go
figure!?) The Eyes of Amaryllis is a moody composition with layer upon
layer of sounds, ranging from low bass guitar riffs to pipe-organ chords to
dark, devilish vocals. Destination? is one of the more upbeat pieces on
Amaryllis. The music is a choppy combination of quick power guitar riffs,
tin-like percussion, and rolling beats. The rhythm line behind Storm in the
Night is reminiscent of a waltz, while the vocal delivery does nothing but
add to that same effect. Listening to this track I get the sensation of
spinning around and around on a deserted dance floor. Devotion is
partially driven by its merry-go-round styled sequence, while the vocals are
bellowed out against a wall of muted metal guitar chords. Amaryllis finishes
off with Danced, a track that contains a minimalistic electro rhythm
line, somber vocals, and slow paced beat programming. As a whole The Escape
isn’t the best goth I’ve heard, but at the same time, I’ve heard a lot worse.
