EQUINOX - Holon
Songs: 9 Time: 66:52
Equinox,
for those who don't know, is yet another side-project from the man behind
Front Line Assembly, Bill Leeb. Holon is a 9 track CD in
which Mr. Leeb takes his music straight into the big beat techno realm. The
easiest way to describe the sound of Equinox would be to imagine a less 'cyber'
version of the last FLA CD, FLAvour of the Weak. Apparently what
began as a trial of the big beat techno sound eventually turned into a
full-fledged project….Equinox. Contact sounds like a more updated
Intermix piece, sans the multitude of samples. Throbbing rhythms, light / agile
sequences, and rolling beats all come together on this 7 ˝ minute techno track.
Nova Man sounds like a sci-fi version of the Chemical Brothers,
complete with analogue sounds and fast-paced beats separated by cleverly placed
breaks. The driving beat behind Phenomena is jumpy, radical, and
complimented by spacey sequences. Funky Ass is another beat heavy track
in which Leeb and Peterson add an array of various sequences that transform what
could have been a relatively boring piece into a very interesting, 'get up and
dance' track. Electronic Dreams finds Equinox utilizing a weighty, more
bass heavy rhythm combined with semi-noisy, fluctuating sequences. Holon ends
with Horizon, a bizarre piece that follows no standard music rules. A
constant, pounding beat is combined with everything from staticy sequences to
sci-fi synth sounds. Holon is interesting simply because of who is behind it.
Although, as of late, I do not find myself as attracted to Leeb material as in
the past, I still think that he is a genius when it comes to recreating /
redefining the state of electronic music. With Equinox he once again proves
that his sound can never be pigeonholed.
