Artificial Hell is a new MCD
from the California band Enclave. Enclave take the coldwave sound one
step further, making it harder, angrier, and coarser. Artificial Hell is a MCD
that borders on metal with just a touch of electro. The songs are heavily
reliant on the crunchy guitar work and less reliant on the electronics. The
title track begins with some noisy electronics, but the vigorous guitars soon
kick in, drowning out what little rhythm and electronics there are. The vocals
seem to be naturally distorted and nearly indecipherable, but with the lyrics
printed in the sleeve this can be overlooked. Otherworld retains the
electro enhanced ‘metal’ sound, but again the loudness of the guitars drown out
the beats. Possibly Enclave could have mixed the guitars down a tad in order to
make some room for their percussion. Another track that begins on a less
aggressive foot is Clones. This piece is the best track on Artificial
Hell due to the fact that the guitar work isn’t as intrusive and overbearing.
This is also one of the longest pieces, clocking in at just over 8 minutes,
but, with the occasional breaks, it never get tiring. All in all, Enclave’s
sound isn’t really my bag, but then again I prefer my music to me more
electronically based with very little guitar work. If you’re a fan of coldwave
but feel that it could stand to be edgier, than Enclave’s sound my excite you.
