E.C.M.
- Ambivalence
Songs: 12 Time: 74:00
Hailing from Switzerland, E.C.M.
(Electronic Counter Measures) recently released their follow-up to last years
Blechreiz CD. With a much more complex musical structure, in
addition to a more diverse approach, Ambivalence fits in well with
the rest of the Zoth family. E.C.M. are sample-meisters and even go as far as
to write a song about it (Instrument.) This track is loaded with fresh
samples, demonic vocals, and a frenzied percussion. One problem I do have with
this track is the lyrics. While they’re delivery is fine, the words themselves
are a bit trite;
"…I hate my mother fucking shit sampler.
Destroying all the many hours of work.
In less than a second, just like that.
Again and again…"
Obviously he draws these feelings from
personal experience. Alternate Reality combines Star Trek sound effects
with a noisy rhythm line, staticy beats, and distorted vocals. There are some
amazing breaks in this piece which merge break-beats with various samples. The
music behind Total Confusion (Out of Control) sounds like a
conglomeration of Some More Crime and Swamp Terrorists, with a bit
of trance tossed in during the brief breaks. A great track that keeps the
energy level peaked. Bastard (Quiet) is a beat heavy, experimental noise
track with some remarkable, yet slightly grating, sequences. The two part
Urban Hallucinogenic manages to morph from a spacey, atmospheric track into
a more aggressive, cyber electro piece with robotic sound effects and a
galloping beat. The second half takes things back down to a relaxing state,
melding soothing electro sequences with a steady, mid-paced beat and subdued
rhythm line. E.C.M.’s music draws from a great deal of other electronic genres.
From the warped techno sounds of Shaft Paranoia to the sci-fi electro
sounds of BF-Section and the calming trance sounds of Cyclick,
E.C.M. aren’t afraid to do a bit of experimentation.
