DYSTOPIA ONE
- Attempted Mustache
Songs: 14 Time: 45:13
I’m not too sure whether or not these guys
are comedians or musicians, but either way they do what they do and they do it
well. Attempted Mustache (not sure where that title came from)
was the 1996 CD by Dystopia One, a New York hard rock/industrial band.
While the music remains gritty and rough via the raw drums and chunky guitars,
artful melodies are intertwined throughout each piece with the laid back synths
(and even a harmonica?) Start starts off the CD with lyrics that are
reminiscent of the structure of this sentence; ‘before we begin, we had to
begin, before I got in there, I had to get in.’…subtly humorous. The next
piece, All Cops are Dicks is Dystopia One’s jab at both police officers
and the typical rap artist, anti-cop songs. The noisy guitar work on this piece
is more aligned with punk than anything else, but the rhythm and vocals are what
propel it towards the realm of industrial. On Skinheads Don’t Get Hathead
(gotta love that title) Dystopia One slow down the musical pace and add a
demonic distortion to the vocals. For those of you who despise Bryan Adams
as much as I, you’ll love Dystopia One’s bizarre cover of Heaven.
Switching back and forth between low key verses and bellowed choruses and
adding a carnival styled bridge make for one interesting listen. In addition to
that, this track is rather catchy too. Pointing out the similarities between
courtship and streetwalking, Dating is Prostitution is a hilarious number
with powerful drums, progressive synth sequences and hollow vocals. Charles
Bronson, STD's, bugs and guns; it's all in here. I have to hand it to these
guys, this is the funniest album I’ve heard in quite some time; a modern day
RevCo if you will.
