Re-Membrances 1998

Fronted by a brand new male vocalist, Dust
of Basement re-releases some of their previous tunes, along with a few new
pieces on Re-Membrances 1998. Whereas the previous male vocalist
(Axel) had an intensely gruff delivery, the new vocalist (M.S.) has a less harsh
approach. On the remake of God's Own Fairytales the music is subtle and
pleasant, as are Brigitta's vocals. There is still a bit of density to M.S.'s
vocals, but not near as much as on the original. The rolling rhythm is
complemented by a fixed beat and droning sequences. Amok is propelled by
the dueling vocalists and the deep, bass rhythm. On this piece the sequences
are airy and used primarily to develop and maintain a nice melody. The music
behind Genocide is a tad faster and more upbeat, falling more into the
catchy synth-pop category. Brigitta's vocals are laid over top of one another,
making it seem as if there are two female lead vocalists. Dreams of
Persecution is an even faster piece with operatic vocals, surging beats,
thick male vocals, and drifting synth lines. Lullaby has a techno beat
that is aligned with noisy sequences, sweet vocals, and a pounding rhythm.
Panic on the Titanic take this same piece and push it even further into the
techno realm by placing the beats and rhythm into the forefront of the mix,
while still allowing Brigitta's vocals to shine through during the chorus.
Aside from the different male vocals, the songs on this album sound much
cleaner than before and even a bit more melodic. Re-Membrances 1998 should be
the springboard of what Dust of Basement will produce in the future.
