DRYFT - Cell

When I first heard Dryft, on the Exoskeleton 2 compilation, I was immediately blown away.  That track, Crash, became one of my favorite one to open up the night with at the club.  One particular evening a goth / electro looking guy came running up the stairs asking me if I had any more dark d 'n b like what I was playing. Well, Crash was all I had, so I told him, 'no, but keep you eyes open for a CD by a band called Dryft."  In the meantime, I did the same.  Finally, Cell was released and to put it mildly, 'Holy shit this is an amazing CD!'  Cell begins with Slalom, a hideously bombastic piece with rolling beats and rhythms that'll make you bob your head like crazy.  Also tossed into the mix are some of those Gridlockian noise elements that boast Dryft up and above your typical d 'n b, making it even nastier and darker.  Whereas most dark d 'n b projects rely heavily upon snippets of violent movie or rap samples, Dryft manages to steer clear of that stereotype by utilizing the noise elements to enhance his sound.  Such is the case on nearly every one of the tracks.  While none of the pieces really contain anything unique to separate them from one another, together they manage to cast the listener into a seemingly endless pit filled with nightmares, ghouls, and other demonic entities.  From start to finish Cell is a fantastic CD that will leave you drooling for more.  Now, if that guy from the club asks me again for more dark d 'n b I can reply with a simple, "You got it," knowing full well that Dryft's Cell is tucked away safely in my bag.  Kudos to Cadoo for unleashing Cell unto the world.
