DOUBTING THOMAS - Father Don't Cry

Songs: 8 Time:  41:20

Reissued after numerous years, the Father Don’t Cry EP by Doubting Thomas can finally be found again and this time there are a few bonuses.  Do the 2 bonus tracks make it worth the wait?  Let’s look at the first extra track, T.H.C.  T.H.C. was recorded in 1994, three years after the original Doubting Thomas material was released into the arms of many a fan.  There is a distinct difference between the older tracks and T.H.C.  The difference is not only in sound, but also in composition.  T.H.C. still sounds as if it is a soundtrack piece, but rather than being moody or atmospheric, like many of the older pieces, it comes of as being a bit more quirky (almost as if it were the theme song to some ‘hip’ new television cop show.)  Not that it’s a bad thing, but it was not what I had expected.  The other new piece is Majickal Horse, which again was recorded in ’94.  This tracks is very short ( under 2:30) which doesn’t really give it time to go anywhere.  Driven by warped vocals samples, Majickal Horse is darker than T.H.C., but it still seems to lack the spontaneity of previous Doubting Thomas pieces.  The real gem of this MCD is the extended mix of the title track.  Father Don’t Cry is one of those songs that will remain a standard in the atmospheric electro industrial genre; a track which many others will be judged by.  This may be the first soundtrack styled piece which contains enough bite to get people on the dance floor.  Lastly, what I consider to be the best track off of Doubting Thomas’ only full length, entitled The Infidel, I Come in Piece is also tacked onto this reissue.  Between the creepy samples and eerie sequences, this has to be one of the most frightening tracks to ever be composed.  Do not listen to this piece in the dark!  So, to answer my initial question, I do believe that the re-release of this MCD was needed, but as far as the new / bonus tracks go, they’re nothing to get too worked up about.  I’m sure that you’ll find yourself drawn more towards the older material present on here which, after all, represents the birth of Doubting Thomas.
