Nation State is the MCD initiation to
Jamie Duffy and Jason Novak's (aka Acumen Nation) techno aligned side
project, DJ? Acucrack. Nation State is not your typical techno, in that
the internal elements are much darker than your typical, cookie-cutter techno.
Tracks such as Neophyte and Bitch Universal are built upon rough
drum -n- bass beats and clothed with ominous, swirling sequences. Nation
State (Shorty Mix) sounds like intro music to a futuristic video game. A
solid, 136 BPM percussion is complimented with crisp, churning sequences and a
stable rhythm. The complexity of the trip-hop styled beats on Time For You
To Leave is undermined by the quirky sequences and spooky synth lines. If
you're expecting this to be a continuation of the Acumen Nation sound, you'll be
sadly disappointed, but if you judge it on its own merit, it is quite good.
Nation State easily contends with (and even outshines) many of the bland,
uninspired techno projects on the market today.
