DJ? ACUCRACK - Mutants of Sound

Mutants of Sound is the debut full length by DJ? Acucrack.  DJ? Acucrack is the side-project of Jason Novak and Jamie Duffy, known for their work as Acumen Nation.  The sound of Mutants of Sound is a far cry from that of Acumen, but then again, isn't that why side-projects are formed?  Forget about coldwave and think about beat orientated, dense techno without a guitar to be found.  Granted, there seems to be an ever growing amount of so called 'techno' artists in the world today and most of them produce bland, recycled material without a shred of ingenuity.  Jason and Jamie, on the other hand, have a grasp on what is fresh and different and his interpretation of this genre of music can be found on Mutants of Sound.  No happy hardcore with trite diva samples.  No 20 minute, endlessly droning ambient pieces that lead nowhere.  No over exuberant rasta-themed break-beat.  Not once on this CD does DJ? Acucrack resort to this overused styles and sounds.  Instead, Mutants of Sound contains 11 tracks of dark techno with varied beat styles and intelligent sequences.  The sound of DJ? Acucrack walks the thin line between IDM and techno without ever stepping over the line in either direction.  On tracks such as Lust in Space you'll find that the beats are akin to d'n b techno while the sequences are more aligned with the intelligent side of dance music.  Tracks like Road Speed Governor sound like sci-fi action soundtracks run through a meat grinder.  The rhythms and beats are dirty and the sequences have that certain futuristic feel to them.  Get in Me sounds like big beat on acid, which, I suppose, if you listened to it while on acid it would make for quite an experience.  The all beat constructed Scientists Playing God is a medley of weired out break-beat mixed with more militaristic / marching band stlyed beats.  This is a very intense and bizarre piece….. a nice way to finish off the album.  DJ? Acucrack isn't afraid to stir things up a bit by taking something that is standard and twisting it so out of proportion that it becomes something entirely new.  The Mutants of Sound title could not be more fitting.
