D!V!S!ON #9 - Omen II

D!v!s!on # 9 is the experimental solo project of Mick Hale (Crocodile Shop.)  When I say ‘experimental’ I’m not referring to music that is non-structured or spontaneous.  What I mean is the D!v!s!on # 9 is a project in which Mick can experiment with various styles not typically hear within a Crocodile Shop piece.  Tooted as only having ‘drum ‘n bass overtones’ Omen II is actually a full-on d‘n b album complete with the raga samples and pounding, spastic beats.  There are some elements of dub weaved through some of the tracks, but they don’t stand out as much as the d’n b sounds.  It’s rather hard to try to describe the ‘sound’ of this CD, but if you can imagine what might be recorded if Krome & Tyme and Mick Harris (Scorn) were locked inside of Subconscious studios for 24 hours, this just may be the result.  Omen II is a very different style of d’n b, and I don’t think it’s the kind of music that would be easy for current herd of techno dj’s to latch onto.  At the same time I can’t see that many electro heads will really get into it either.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s some very strong material, but I really don’t think that there’s an audience for it…..yet.
