DIESEL CHRIST - Diesel Mode 97

Songs: 9  Time: 39:57

Will it never end?  Once again (for what seems like the 100th time this year) we have another Depeche Mode tribute CD.  This time though, the entire disc is done by one group, Diesel Christ.  Unlike most of the groups out there who are covering Mode tracks, Diesel Christ seem to be making a career of it.  A few years back they released a few Mode covers, but this time around the updated their versions on Diesel Mode 97.  Sister of Night, which contains a throbbing beat, melodic / synth-poppy vocals, and sweeping sequences, kicks off the disc.  Useless is redone with airy sequences, soothing vocals, and a dampened rhythm.  The nine minute plus version of It’s No Good begins with a rolling beat, cascading synth patterns and very Gahan-like vocals.  As the song progresses, it breaks down into a great combination of a bass heavy rhythm and a hip-hop fashioned beat.  Distortion is used for the vocals of Barrel of a Gun, while a staticy beat slowly pounds along in the background.  The beat gains strength several times, but eventually returns to its rough sounding origins.  I think that The Love Thieves is the best cover on this disc, but it’s also the shortest, clocking in at 2 minutes.  The vocals are a bit more harsh, the sequences are more innovative, and the beat is designed for dancing.  There are two original tracks on this CD as well, Hallelujah, and Useless Link, the latter being an instrumental comprised of hollow, metallic sequences and a relentless beat.  What Diesel Christ do on here sounds good, but I’d be more happy if they’d focus their sights on some original music next.
