St. Louis’ Die Symphony is a hard
edged, semi-goth, partially electro, partly rock band with a solid sound. On
their Foundations of Malice MCD, the DeVein’s and crew assault the
listener with goth styled vocals, coldwave guitar riffs, and agitated
programming. Amen, a somewhat experimental piece begins this CD, but it
is in no way representative of what is to follow. Lie For You starts of
with a nice, warped beat. Before long the colliding guitars and machine-like
sequences are implemented. Christian’s vocals are crisp and delivered sans
effects. Sometime’s bordering on hard rock, while at other times aligning with
goth, Christian shows his extreme vocal capabilities throughout this CD. A well
developed rhythm, along with pummeling beats and roughed-up guitar work, flows
throughout Come Down. Visions of Chemlab spring to mind while
listening to This Jaded Heart. Christian’s vocals are similar to Jared’s
as is the guitar work of Kelly and Vic. Chamber Dance is the highlight
of this disc. Beginning with a mass of startling samples against a backdrop of
cascading guitar riffs, this piece maintains a high level of energy, making it
the number one choice for club play. As far as demos and self-released material
goes, Foundations of Malice is one of the more masterfully produced and clean
sounding recordings I’ve come across. If they use this release as a tool to
attempt to get a record deal, I can’t see why someone wouldn’t grab them up
immediately.
