D-PRESSIV
- Geffalener Engel
Songs: 10 Time: 45:23
Even though this was released back in 1996, I
was just able to acquire a copy this month. D-Pressiv is a group that
edges towards the synth-pop genre, yet they maintain a grasp on the quieter side
of electro. Uniquely packaged (as most Maschinenwelt CDs are,) the
Gefallener Engel CD is actually shaped like an angel. The only downside
to such a design is that they neglect to include a booklet of any kind in order
to show off the CD itself. All 10 tracks are sung in German, which gives me no
clue as to what the songs are about. It’s CDs like this that always get me
thinking about how much I respect most Europeans for being able to understand
their language as well as English, while here in the states you’re lucky if you
can find a person who has a firm grasp on one language, let alone two or more.
Well, that’s neither here nor there, so I’ll get on with the review.
Originally, D-Pressiv’s music found it’s way into my ears via their second
release, the Weg Ohne Wiederkehr MCD and I was grateful to get a
chance to hear Gefallener Engel, their first full length. Quirky melodies
pulsate through most of the tracks, some of which are fronted by sweet female
vocals and others that are delivered by a mellow male voice. Angst is
one of the better pieces. Both vocalists are present on this piece, which
contains some thick sequences, a light, trotting rhythm, and flat beats.
Leise walks the line between synth-pop and EBM. While the percussion is
definitely rooted in EBM, the sequences and vocals are much more airy and drift
among the heavier beats and rhythms. Mein Bild had a darker edge to it
due to it’s deep and ominous sequences, but it remains non-threatening with the
adage of the docile vocals. With the signing of D-Pressiv, Maschinenwelt opened
their doors to yet another side of electronic music. Fans of synth-pop should
enjoy this release as should the followers of the Euro electro music scene.
