Preceding their debut full length on Flaming
Fish, Cybershadow released this extended MCD that features 5 alternate
mixes of Social Conditioning as well as three other tracks, including a
cover of Leæther Strip’s Adrenaline Rush. Each mix of Social
Conditioning is extremely different from the next and each shines with the
sounds and influences of the bands remixing them. Pivot Clowj / House of
Wires provide two mixes, the first being Remix 3.0. This particular
version is a more melodic, Euro styled track with ultra distorted / whispered
vocals, a prominent beat, and lighter synth patterns. Their second mix, Kind
of Trippy Kind of Maybe Trip Hop Maybe Not Sort of Kind of Maybe Mix, does
away with the solid beat and replaces it with a more laid back and (well) kind
of trippy beat. Audio Pardox’s Lobotomized Parasite Dub takes the
track into a more minimalistic, yet harder field with analogue sounding / bubbly
keys, a smattering of rigid guitar injections, and more dominant beats. The
Finding Ling Lings Head Mix is the longest of the tracks (clocking in over
11 minutes) and takes the original piece in several different directions.
Although this is practically an instrumental version, their is plenty of
diversity within it to keep me interested. It’s almost as if there is a trio of
songs within this one mix, as the track takes some hard turns in alternate
directions. The later portion of this mix is the part that sounds closest to
the original, as it uses many of the same sounds and sequences. Along with
mixing the previously mentioned piece, Delayed Shock Reaction also
provides the Heavy Hand of Pain Mix. This is yet another long piece, but
this time they opt to rework the original using looped portions of the original
sounds and implementing a trip-hop beat. Cybershadow’s cover of Adrenaline Rush
isn’t a far cry from the original with the exception that this version seems a
bit lighter. Social Conditioning is a great MCD that is sure not
to bore the listener with tired / near similar remixes of one track.
