CYAN
- Rage
Songs: 7 Time: 34:54
Cyan’s new
MCD, Rage, is basically just a remix disc, but there are a few
tracks on here which were not on their Off Beat debut, True.
First up is Ring of Light (The Master-Mix.) Cyan’s unmistakable
(½ goth / ½ electro whine) vocals are what set this band apart and we get a full
dose of them on this track. Behind the vocals, the music basically consists of
an electro/techno hybrid built around hard dance beats, subtle guitar and bleepy
sequences. Die Vögel (Hitcook-Mix) is driven by a semi hip-hop
orientated beat, sinuous synth work, and a bizarre mixture of samples. The
Exiter-Mix of Like a Flow contains oscillating sequences, angry
vocals, and a retro-electro beat. Shared male/female vocals make Kick It Out
(Blue-Light-Mix) differ from the rest of the tracks. The female vocals add
a new dimension and work well when juxtaposed against Cyan’s. A live version of
Hate the System slowly creeps out of the speakers with a gritty,
pulsating sequences and distant vocals. Lastly, an updated (’97) version of
San Diego rounds out the disc with some playful synth orchestrations
(consisting of mild piano and strings), a semi-gothic styled rhythm, and a club
friendly beat. Every song on Rage was redesigned to become more accessible /
danceable, which seems to work well for all of the tracks. With the two new
songs being added, this MCD also gives us a glimpse into what direction Cyan may
take with his next release.
