CYAN - Fiction
Songs: 11  Time:  54:15
No one could ever mistake the unique vocals of Cyan for anyone else.  With there second full play CD, Fiction, Cyan continues to meld operatic influences with strict dance electro.  Much more straightforward than his Eternal Afflict project, Cyan's songs are built around hard beats, catchy sequences, and melodramatic vocals.  Also, added into the mix of many of the tracks are lighter, symphonic / operatic elements that give Cyan its added edge.  New God is Born is a track that has all of these elements.  A pounding beat acts as the backbone, while lighter keys, crisp vocals, and a fluctuating rhythm all wrap themselves around it.  Die Vögel is comprised of an intense rhythm, airy sequences, frightening samples and swift beats.  This is an another wonderful dance piece.  Winus' backing vocals add more density to an already great, beat-heavy track, Mission: Detail.  Beginning with an atmospheric feel, Tonightmare suddenly kicks up with an expeditious beat, backing guitar and keys, and drifting vocals. God Has Got a Gun is the highlight of Fiction.  This particular piece contains layers of mellow sequences and squeaky keys as well as a pummeling rhythm, Enigma-esque chant samples, and vicious vocals.  Feel the Bite has some harsher elements, including holocaustic samples, noisy sequences and rhythms, and thunderous beats.  The final piece, Underwater World, is a nine-minute track that begins with a militaristic beat, airy sequences and galloping rhythm.  As the track continues, docile female vocals are added in with Cyan's own semi-whiny voice.  The track continues down this gothic / electro path until the end when all but the vocals and keys drop out of the mix, giving the piece an ethereal feel.  Before the track finishes, the musical elements return for one final spectacle of compelling composition.  Unfortunately most people don't know of Cyan, unless you've really studied up on your underground acts.  The music, as well as the vocals, on Fiction is truly unique. I figure that it may take a few more releases before Cyan can really break through and become a more recognizable name in the scene.
