Well, for starters, congrats goes out to
Cut.Rate.Box for getting signed to both Ascension Records (in Europe) and
Gashed! (in North America.) I vividly remember the first time I heard
Cut.Rate.Box (nearly a decade ago) at a club called 701 South in Daytona Beach.
They use to hold this alternative night on Sundays, called Sunday Bloody
Sunday, which I frequented religiously every week. When I first heard the song,
entitled Two-Headed Dog, I immediately thought it was a great, Puppy
clone. Since then my tastes have changed and I've learned to appreciate
more diverse and original music. In that time, Cut.Rate.Box has developed a
sound all their own. After moving away from Florida and finally landing in New
Orleans, this now 2-man outfit took some time off and redefined their sound
before releasing Blueiceblack. On this MCD, the electronics are
much thicker and the vocals are more straightforward. There is a solid song
structure in each piece, each with its own unique blend of electronics and
vocals. Some of the pieces are edgier than others, but all of them have a
definite, well-rooted style. I am glad to see that Cut.Rate.Box has taken a
giant leap forward in their sound and its fairly easy to see why the labels
snatched them up so quickly.
