COVENANT
- Europa
Songs: 9 Time: 47:08
I don't know. Maybe it's just me, but
Europa just didn't do it for me. I am extremely fond of the other
Covenant releases, but Europa just doesn't have those catchy sequences and
rhythms that the other releases did. I also found this CD to be more simplistic
and not nearly as complex. It seems to me that Europa is a vocal driven CD,
whereas past Covenant releases were more music driven, as if they were conceived
for the dance floor. Tension has a wet rhythm and steady beats, but they
never seem to change. For the entire length of the track the only thing that
alters are the lyrics and the minimalistic backing sequence. After about 2
minutes of that I had to move on. Leviathan does have an interesting,
noisy beat pattern and some nicely manipulated synth sounds, but once again the
beat never changes, although it does drop out and return a few times. Nearly
the same rings true for Wind of the North. I keep waiting for a radical
change, but it never happens. The track begins, continues, and ends with the
same musical patterns. I Am has a great beat that, as in Leviathan,
utilizes some noisier elements. I had high hopes for this track, but, as seems
to be the way of Europa, it goes nowhere. Overall, I was severely disappointed
with Europa, especially after being so enthralled with their previous efforts.
I suppose we'll just have to see where Covenant goes from here, but I
definitely will not be waiting impatiently for their next release.
