COVENANT - Der Leiermann

Der Leiermann is the European only CD single that takes the song Like Tears in the Rain and replaces the lyrics with those written back in 1824 by German poet Wilhelm Müller.  The music behind this piece is thumping electro with a solid beat, a subtle rhythm, rich sequences comprised of both smooth voices and crisp keys, and those unmistakable vocals.  This is a track built for the dance floor and on the club version, Covenant extend the piece in a nearly six minute dance attack.  An extended mix of Like Tears in the Rain as well as a bonus track (We Break Down) are also present, rounding out the CD single nicely.  Sadly though, the bonus track is nothing to get overly excited about, as it has a rather cheesy, dated techno feel to it.  In an age of limited editions and extremely bizarre packaging, it was refreshing to see Covenant and Dependent do something entirely different in order to get the attention of the average 'industrial' CD consumer.  While Der Leiermann CD single is not a necessity for fans of the genre, it is definitely something to check out, especially for Covenant fans that deserve a treat.
