The one man synth-pop project known as
Cosmicity recently released his third CD, and his debut on A Different Drum.
Until I did a bit of research, I was unaware that this was indeed the work of
one man. The song structures / arrangements are a splendid blend of light, airy
electronic sequences, subtle beats, and vaporous vocals. Speak -n- Spell
sounding vocal distortion starts out Crucify, a track that is driven by
its strong rhythm and atmospheric vocals. The beat programming on Two
Month’s Salary is exquisite, reminding me of the similar work done by
Infam. Caught somewhere between hip-hop and breakbeat, this track shows the
immense diversity of Mark’s programming abilities. Another strong beat,
although quite a bit slower, can be found within Thursday. Again, the
vocals are airy, but solid. Visionary contains a twisted sequence
progression comprised of both deep, wet sounds and the occasional bell sound. A
melodic carousel styled sequence is combined with strings on the title track,
Isabella. Finally, the Finale Mix of Crucify is geared more towards
club play, but it is equally as impressive as its counterpart. Between the
percussion elements, lively sequences, and well trained vocals, Isabella is a
admirable release and I hope Mark can continue with (and even enhance) his sound
on future releases.
