In Perspective
is a look into the past of Cosmicity. Most of the tracks were taken from
Cosmicity's first three releases, but there are a few bonus' tossed in as well.
From 1994's The Vision we have Maybe, Egypt,
Keep Me in Mind, With the Moon, and M. From 1995's The
Moment we have Awake, The Moment, Into It, and
Defiance. Finally, from 1996's Syn we have From You
and Ignore Her. I was impressed with the similarity in sound and style
between all of the pieces, considering they were recorded over several years
time. Although it's a short piece, Maybe is one of those synth-pop tracks that
jumps put at you. Fast paced vocals, jittery synth patterns, short sample
snippets, and brisk beats make this piece really stand out. Egypt is a lighter
piece with smooth vocals and equally as smooth sequences. The beats on this
piece are flattened and seem to only act as a way to keep the music in time.
Another slower piece, From You, is a vocal driven track that features 80's
style synth-pop programming and mid-paced beats. Tragedy, taken from
Cat Compilation II, is a semi-quirky dance track with mellow vocals
and a steady, rolling beat. Even more dance orientated, M stands out as a more
complex piece with airy sequences, fantastic, buoyant vocals, and a catchy beat.
An exclusive mix of this piece, entitled My Body's Jumping Mix,
shows even more musical diversity in that it contains more varied synth sounds
and more prominent beat. Into It reverts back to the old style of 80's synth-pop
with the addition of a harder rhythm and nice breaks between the chorus and the
refrains. Considering the majority of these pieces are found on albums that are
now out of print, this may be your only chance to get to hear Mark's initial
break into the synth-pop market. On a side note, all of the tracks appearing on
In Perspective were chosen via a survey of fans worldwide.
