COKLACOMA
- Coklopop
Songs: 13 Time: 67:16
Branching out from his Severed Heads
project, Tom Ellard goes haywire with Coklacoma, a dense album with
varied styles of weirdness that only he could be capable of. With song titles
ranging from Patient Sees Surgeon’s Outward and Upward Whirr and
Everybody in Birmingham Ignores Jesus, Coklacoma’s sound is that of twisted
ambiance mixed with a few danceable grooves and bizarre sampled material. Each
song is strong on it’s own, but when played one after another they transport the
listener to a mysterious new world where everything is laid back, yet nothing is
quite as it seems. It’s extremely hard to pinpoint a certain style of sound
that is prevalent throughout the recording. Mood inducing music comes to mind,
but then again I have no idea exactly what ‘mood’ it is supposed to prompt.
Whereas Severed Heads’ music was (mostly) geared towards the body, Coklacoma’s
sound seems to be geared towards the mind. Granted, there are a few catchy
beats that may have been used to spur dancing, but overall Coklopop
stands out as being more intelligent than that.
