Retaining most of their tongue-in-cheek approach to electro music, Cat Rapes Dog returned in mid-1998 with a brand new CD, The Secrets of God.  Produced by Eskil Simonsson (Covenant) The Secrets of God features new front man, John Wreibo, who took Joel's place when he left the band after the Fuck Nature EP.  John does bring a new element to the band while, at the same time, retaining the same vocal integrity that Joel founded.  Capitalist Punishment kicks off this new CD with a technofied beat, light guitars, quiet sequences, and gruff vocals.  Within the first minute of this piece you'll realize that CRD hasn't really changed too much.  Incorporated into this (and nearly every other track as well) is Annelle's uniquely sweet vocals.  Motorman reverts back to a time when CRD was all about cars and sex.  This track tells the tale of a man who has sex with his car.  The music contains a guitar driven rhythm, solid dance beats, and dense vocals.  Down and Out contains techno styled sequences coupled with harsh guitars, grouchy vocals, and a fast-paced, militaristic beat.  Giving a nod to the death metal scene, Something I Ate contains harder guitars, but joins them with silly lyrics about a sickness brought on by food.  On Workers of the World, CRD take a serious look at the modern work force and back it up with slow beats, crunchy guitars, and thick rhythms.  An uncompleted song, World's Fair (Demo version) has a galloping beat, scratchy sequences, harmonizing vocals, and a slight reggae flavor.  One thing about this release that is odd is the inclusion of the lyrics for How the Country Falls, a track that doesn't even appear on this CD. This song, however, did appear on the Pleasure and Pain compilation put out by CRD's label, SSC.  For fans of CRD, The Secrets of God is a fine release that keeps in the spirit of what Cat Rapes Dog is all about.  Even though a member of Covenant produced it, don't expect it to sound anything like them. What you can expect is an energetic release with several tracks being geared towards the dance floor.
