CAT RAPES DOG - People as Prey

Yikes!  What the hell happened to Cat Rapes Dog?  Well, I guess it should have seen it coming.  Whereas Cat Rapes Dog used to be one of my favorite groups, they have greatly slipped in my personal ranking.  People as Prey is their latest effort, and their weakest to date.  Over the past few years, CRD has slowly began to implement more and more guitar into their music, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing in music, but I had always been impressed with their aggressive synth programming, which is now lost behind a wall of thunderous guitars.  It’s not even that CRD have aligned their music within the realms of coldwave, but rather more within the metal genre.  Even more surprising is the fact that some of the music on People as Prey was designed by S.P.O.C.K., but if you didn’t read the liner notes you would never know it.  There are a few standout tracks, such as Mother Goddess and This Is How the Country Falls.  The lyrics on Mother Goddess are based around the idea of equality among sexes and the music, while still a bit rock orientated, still possesses a nice hip-hop beat style.  What begins as your atypical CRD tune, This is How the Country Falls, does implement some guitar work, but overall this track is based around s strong line of sequences and programmed beats.  Not only that, but this track is also quite addictive when it comes to the shared vocals of John Lindquister and Annihille Bertilsson.  Ms. Bertilsson’s sweeping backing vocals are one of the few remaining elements of CRD that I really take pleasure in. I will admit that CRD still haven’t lost their touch when it comes to tongue-in-cheek lyrics and Atlanta Hotel proves just that. Ms. Bertilsoon takes the lead on this track, comprised of electro generated beats, crunchy guitars, and a mild variety of backing synth sounds.  The remainder of People as Prey isn’t really that impressive.  If you are looking to hear the heart of CRD start with some of their earlier works and try not go beyond their Fuck Nature MCD.  It seems that after that point their music had begun to slide into a more mainstream sound.
