Carfax Abby
is a local Orlando band whom I really do not know too
much about. I was handed this CD by a friend of mine who runs a local record
shop and asked if I could write a review of it, so here goes…….This 3-track demo
begins with The Sound of Her Wings (Waiting in Darkness), a slow moving,
partially gothic designed piece with light sequences, ominous vocals, and docile
beats. As the track progresses, some harder-edged guitar sounds are
implemented, as well as some backing female vocals. There is some definite
potential with this track, but I would have liked to hear less muffled vocals
and more prominent female vocals. Something Wicked… is the next piece,
which, much like the first, has some gothic overtones. Again, the vocals could
be cleaned up a bit by getting rid of the echo-effect on them. The beats on
Something Wicked… trudge along at a slow pace, but actually compliment the
simplistic electronic sequences as well as the guttural guitar sounds. The
final piece, Lamishta, has a bit of a tribal feel to it, mainly due to
the beat and rhythm programming. This track begins with a melodic female chant
overtop of the beats, which eventually give way to much high quality (not to
mention more audible) male vocals. The music behind this piece is an
impenetrable combination of distant chugging guitars and slow gothic sequences.
Unfortunately I have no idea about the background of this project and I have no
way to get in touch with any of its members. If this is their premier demo,
than I will definitely give them kudos and, with a bit of fine tuning, I can
easily for see them making a name for themselves both locally and possibly
beyond.
