CALVA Y NADA
- Schlaf
Songs: 12 Time: 44:04
For me, the music of Calva Y Nada has
always been either a hit or miss. With Schlaf, Breņal and
Constantin seem to have missed the target. Leben is the initial electro
assault with its pounding rhythm and gruff German vocals. While these two
aspects seem like they may make for a good track, both are also unchanging,
making the track rather boring after a minute or two. Alicia is a bit
better due to its minimal changes, but the sounds that are used sound very dated
and nowhere near those used by most of today's electro artists. The title track
is the best one of the bunch. Schlaf has both a driving rhythm and
subtle musical changes. There is a certain dark mood produced by this piece
which makes it all the more interesting to listen to. El Susto Es Muestro
begins as a beatless, ballad-like piece with softer vocals and mellow
sequences. Before long the vocals do become rougher and a militaristic beat is
joined by a steady rhythm, but not too long after that the piece ends. Keine
Angst is the one piece that does sound current, especially with the use of
the 'cyber' rhythm, multiple beat changes, and a variety of interesting sounds
tat come and go. The final piece, Wallies Traum, reverts back to the old
school sounds of yesteryear, but at least this piece has the needed musical
changes to make it somewhat interesting. The remainder of the pieces are mostly
slower, less gripping pieces that really go nowhere. It's too bad that a band
that has been around as long as Calva Y Nada can't strive to be a bit more
interesting and less dated.
