BIOPSY -
Cervix State Sequences
Songs: 13 Time: 58:51
Biopsy,
consisting of two members of the South American electro outfit knows as
Aghast View, assaults the U.S. with their second release, entitled
Cervix State Sequences. Treading on familiar territory, they return
with an electro sound that runs the gamut between break-beat styled industrial
riddled with snippets of hard guitar riffs, to melodic, semi ethereal
instrumentals and they even toss in a cover of New Order’s Fine Time.
Indifference kicks off this wonderful CD with a reggae influenced rhythm
line and distorted vocals, but before you get adjust your internal audio
monitors the song takes off with throttling guitars, roughed up beats, hip-hop
samples, and low ended sequences. This song goes through several changes,
sounding at times like the Swamp Terrorists on acid while at others times
it is reminiscent of intelligent dance music. This is a powerful track and
would be worth the price of the CD alone. Next up we have Hypoxia, a
dark track that melds together EBM and thrash / guitar industrial. Also present
are subtle break-beats and insane sequence programming. What begins as a noise
collage, Cervix (Morphologic Mixx) quickly picks up speed as it
introduces the apocalyptic samples, twisted vocals, and a beat that weaves
itself back and forth between hip-hop and straight ahead electro dance. The
music of Shade of Sickness dabbles in the coldwave genre while the vocals
are delivered in a more rap style. Vocoder effected vocals are mixed with
cascading sequences and a pulsating rhythm on CX State. Harsh
Disposal begins with a tribalistic beat that soon gets loose and becomes
more techno like while the bleepy electronics (ala Babyland) play on in
the background. Again, as on most of the tracks on this CD, this one is loaded
with samples. Off of possibly the last decent album by New Order, Biopsy
extract Fine Time and cover it with energy, angst and aggression. Turbulent
guitar riffs, contorted vocals, and a few samples from the original tune are all
blended together to create this dance floor stomper. Alter Idem is a
slower, more soundtrack orientated piece that gives the listener a break from
all the power of the 1st half of the CD. It’s sound brings to mind images of
traveling by boat through a tropical rain forest (don’t ask me why…) Lumen
Obscura is another instrumental, but this one is more electronic / electro
sounding. Still, with the samples chosen, it has a definite tribal feel to it.
Finally, Binary CX is a slowed down, less aggressive, non-vocal
interpretation of CX State. The album rounds out with two remixes, one for
Cervix and one for Hypoxia, both of which are strong reworkings of their
respective originals. Biopsy’s style is definitely wide-spread, in that the
music covers quite a range of electronic styles. Cervix State Sequences is one
of the strongest releases to come out in 1997 and will easily carry us over
until the new Aghast View is released.
