AXONAL WARFARE - Statis Interrupted
Songs: 10  Time: 49:02

Actually recorded and ready for release in ’96, Statis Interruped was to be the debut release from France’s own Axonal Warefare, but due to the circumstances of Celtic Circle, SI never officially saw the light of day.  If you’re lucky enough to track down a copy of this, I advise that you buy it without delay.  Even though this was recorded between ‘94 and ‘96, the music sounds as fresh as if it were recorded in ’98.  Axonal Warfare have a special way of combining complex sequences, hearty rhythms, gritty vocals, and militant beats that easily rival more prominent bands in the electro scene (i.e. FLA).  Of all the CDs I’ve received in the past month, this is the one that I constantly find myself reaching for.  10 tracks long, SI begins with the short instrumental Cash.  Cash sets a great mood for the music that is to follow.  Pulsating sequences are aligned with sporadic beats and mutating background noises.  From there Axonal Warfare launches into Fluids, a high-tech, cybernized electro piece swaying synth lines, quirky sequences, pounding beats, and brief sampled vocal snippets.  Midway through the piece the beat changes into a near break beat style and is accompanied by a few quick samples.  Guilty is another great track with a noisy / clanging intro and upfront vocals.  Although the beats aren’t in the forefront of the music, their presence is still felt.  Due to its beat programming, Distance has a slight techno feel to it, but at the same time, the synth lines and sequences are more aligned with synth-pop and the vocals and choice of samples pull the track towards the realm of dark electro.  Hopefull is the star of SI. This rhythm drive piece is complemented by a wide array of samples (that range from distorted growls to gothic choirs to movie lines), a strict beat, catchy sequences, and easily learnt vocals.  The music of Axonal Warfare combines the best elements of many of today’s better acts.  Imagine taking FLA, Evils Toy, and Velvet Acid Christ and locking them together in a studio for weeks.  What they could produce would be close to what Axonal Warfare have done on Statis Interrupted.
